Home Extensions
Home Extensions are ways for you to expand the classroom into your home. It is not meant to add hours and hours of homework to your child. Remember that you should not be doing more than 30 minutes of homework a night at this age level and that should include the 20 minutes we want your to read with your child. We want them to love school not be frustrated and dreading it. A lot of the activities listed may be incorporated into the home in a way that the child doesn't feel they are doing school work, but instead are doing fun activities with their parents. Anytime that you can blur the line of working on school work and fun and games, please do it. Your child doesn't need to feel they are being educated even if they are.
Remember their are Home Extensions in the Cosmic Communications that are very specific to the concepts we are working on in the classroom at that time. The More Home Extensions on the web page are broken down in three categorizes at this time and they are Reading, Writing, and Math. These are more general activities that can work for children at several different educational levels. Again they are meant to help advance your child in a fun and parent bonding way, not as a punishment.
I really encourage before you go on a road trip (even if it's just to Evanston or Rock Springs) look at a few activities to do on the way as a game. Turn off the cars radio and the DVD player and spend some time visiting and having fun playing games that will expand their levels in the classroom.
If you have any questions or if you have other extensions that you do with your child that you would like to share with others please contact me.
