Spelling Tips and Ideas for Practice
Make spelling practice fun! Switch it up, BUT also remember ones that seem to help your child learn better. Stay positive, practice in small chunks, and always remind your child how important it is and how well they are doing. Note: The following list is not in any specific order. The last suggestion is just as helpful as the first.
1. Practice on www.spellingcity.com (also a great place to go when you lose your list).
2. Rainbow Words - Trace over your word 10 times saying each letter's sound as you write it. Make it fun each time they trace it they can use a different color.
3. Read the word and use it in five different sentences.
4. Picture Words - Draw a picture around your word.
5. Missing Letters - Write the words replacing some letters with a line. Replace all phonemes (sounds) being practiced that week, or all vowels, or all consonants, or letters your child is having trouble with.
6. Give your child the number of letters in the word.
7. Scrambled Words - Give your child the letters to spell the word, but not in the right order.
8. Pasta Words - Use alphabet pasta to spell the words.
9. Shaving Cream Words - Spray shaving cream on a flat surface, then write words in the shaving cream.
10. Word Searches
11. Crosswords
12. Outline Words - Write words on graph paper and outline in colors the shape the word makes.
13. ABC Order - Write the words in alphabetical order.
14. Write a story using all your words in it.
15. Ransom Words - Spell your words by cutting out letters from a newspaper or magazine and glue them on a paper.
16. Cheer your words - Pretend you are a cheerleader and call out the words! Sometimes yell; sometimes whisper!
17. Delicious Words - Write words in whipped cream, peanut butter, or anything you can eat!
18. Muddy Words - Write words in mud or sand.
19. Puzzle Words - Write words on construction paper, then cut them out into puzzle shapes. Use different colored paper for different words. Put puzzle pieces in a baggie to put together over and over again.
20. 3D Words- Use modeling clay or play-dough rolled thinly to make your words.
21. Magazine Words - Use an old magazine or newspaper and find your word. Cut it out and glue it on paper.
22. Chunking - Break your words down into little chunks.
23. Tape Recording - Record yourself saying the word and then spelling out the word on a tape. Then listen to the tape, writing the word as you listen to the spelling of the word.
24. Back or Lap Writing - Using your pointer finger, write your spelling word on a partner's back. No partner? Use your lap to write the word on.
25. Flashlight Spelling - In a dark room write spelling words on the wall with a flashlight, saying each letter as it is written.
